Modern production techniques have lowered the requirements of hifi so 
far, now everyone can afford it ;)

I think part of the problem lies in letting artists and producers have 
too much say in the final product (not the people actually recording and 
mastering) They all just want it to appear louder because that sounds 
better to them at the time..

This is all a plot to get people to buy more and more music.
After all, you can't listen to a badly mastered 'shouting' album more 
than about once all the way through (e.g. X&Y) before you have to put 
something else less falsely intense on ;)
