Yup, cut out the side profiles from a quite thick (28 mm) glulam shelf to
get some stability and then attached them to the countertops with angle
brackets. I put some pictures for you at

The shelf is then attached to the drawer slides I mentioned. I have used
them before and they are very sturdy.

2)            How did you connect the two right angle countertops?  Did you
do the standard kitchen fitter think of jointing them with a 45degree cut
and if so, did you do the cut yourself?  I believe its quite difficult to do
a perfect 45degree countertop cut..?

 

They are a custom order as I needed specific measurements and needed nice
edges to attach them as unnoticeable as possible, I got the ones with the
smallest bevels. I just attached the smaller one in a 90 deg angle to the
bigger one as you can see in one of the pics.
