I use Simplify3d and also have used slic3r. Until really recently,
simplify3d had not had an update in ages and slic3r had just about
caught up. It is a fine free option if you don't want to invest in
simplify3d. I think the main advantage of simplify3d is in its various
support placement options and handling of multimaterial print heads.

I have a Prusa i3 mk2 and I think it's the best thing since sliced
Brad especially given the sub $1000 price tag. Its output far out
performs its price tag. I would recommend put it on your list of
printers to consider.
