That's an idea that I've been toying with for some months now. My PC
-well, at least the motherboard, CPU and memory- is six years old now.
In fact, the motherboard is not fast enough for the SSD (a 1 TB Samsung
Pro). If I change those, I can keep the case (a nice Fractal Design
one), the PSU (something like a kilowatt, serious overkill), the SSD,
the HDD, the BD player/DVD writer (which I *never* use), the sound card
(ditto), and all the peripherals.
And yet, the Core i7 closest to the $300 mark is merely twice as fast as
the i7-960 that powers it now. It seems hardly worth making such an
investment. Perhaps I could add more memory (currently, it has 6 GB),
but it usually uses about half, so that seems useless as well.
Then, I could replace the GTX 580 with a GTX 1080, which costs around
$600 and offers a factor 2.5 speed increase. VR? Cool, but considering
the state of my retinas, probably not very useful either. And I kinda
stopped playing video games, except Portal 2 with my son (which the GTX
580 has no problems with) or some leisurely games on Facebook. Heck, GTA
V, which I waited for patiently for years, I simply stopped playing.
So, for the first time in many, many years, I don't see the point of
spending north of €1000 on stuff that'll make my PC twice as fast. The
way I use it has changed, and the tablet has taken over a lot of its
tasks (although nothing can beat a keyboard, mouse and 22" screen,
except perhaps a bigger screen).
