Yea it's weird, it makes sense but would be weird if it was the only way. Fortunately it comes with a female to female lightning adapter to just hook it up to a charger - only down side is it's very small - but it's possible it can just stay on the pencil permanently, I have to look at it again. I most likely will always use the "out the bottom method"
