i5 or i7?

Suppose I were to upgrade my PC (which I'm not, for the foreseeable 
future at least), would it make sense to get an i7 for music software, 
as opposed to an i5? What little "information" (for want of a better 
word) I've read on the internet, they merely assume that more threads = 
more performance, without actually backing up that claim. For playing 
games, for example, there isn't much added value in an i7, and sometimes 
it actually performs worse.
