Well, in order to tackle synth electronics you need a digital meter as a minimum, and an oscilloscope if you really want to sort out lower level faults. Both can be bought these days for under 50eur.

Soldering kit get more expensive... Temperature controlled soldering station, hot air gun, special tools for ICs.

Its a bit like modular synthing..  Once you start, you sort of get addicted.

Apart from skills and knowledge about electronics, the guy has quite a
bit of specialised gear. Except to invest a certain amount of money for
oscilloscopes and other electronic gadgets.
