The behaviour of Preview (which I actually liked till then) is unacceptable! 
It's now in the hands of the programmers (i.e. software quality) if my files stay (unintentionally!) altered or not.
Not only once I had to restore data from my backups because Preview crashed or hung and so 
was unable to restore the original file state. Grrr ...
