hmmm, imo both.
mostly backwards for listeners, but the creators (originally listeners at the first place) are often  captains of the time machine (music) which means:  it’s  them(creators) who go forwards and could see or feel  the “future-past" to finally trying to bring a small part of this future-past back in advance into the present time of now knowing what would be like tomorrow for the mortal listeners …


but knowing that  “information" is not mass neither energy … the creator can have a complete deaf experience exchanged with his public/ listeners  but still being succesful( thank to naivety and labels!)… still Auto Time travelling fx works  for everyone on its own range … 



For Creators: music could be a time travel backwards,forwards and more ( new dimensions :P)... 
For Listeners: music could be a Pavlov time travel backwards including new time referential while listening the music of the new creators .. etc
