Best way to handle the costs in Eurorack:  Go second hand.  You will save 20% to 30%...or more on guys who have decided to sell it all and switch to 5U or Buchla.  By the time you are ready to sell a module, you will probably end up selling it to the same guy for near the same price when he decideds to sell all his 5U and go back to Euro.  It sounds insane, but the Muffwiggler forum is *full* of these guys. 
I've added a lot of modules to my rig this year and I've only bought two modules new (Hex Inverter Galilean moons and the Verbose Multistage).  You stretch the wallet very effectively that way.
The downside is it takes a lot of patience.  You have to be willing to lurk the BST subforum religiously if you are looking for something particularly popular (If you want a Make Noise QMMG, for instance, they sell for more than their original retail and flip over in *seconds* of posting).  Still, when you consider how much you can save it become worth it.
