DSI Prophet 12

I’m actually not super enamored with joysticks myself. I do however love
the mixer envelope which could be implemented without a joystick. The
great thing on the VS and Wavestation was this four input mixer that you
used the envelope to pan around on. I hardly ever touched the joystick but
pretty much every patch had the mixer envelope going. This feature was one
of the main reasons I picked up an Origin as I was hoping to get the VS
type sounds out of it since it had the mixer and the waveforms but I just
didn’t get on well enough with it to justify keeping it for that. Not that
my recommendations mean anything but an interface that had this vector
mixing with envelope but not necessarily the stick itself would be
satisfactory for most cases and far simpler that a dedicated recording
stick – as cool as that would be.

James,
Thanks for the link, I'll heave a read up.
Aurora may not have al these features, but I do have some ideas for
future projects.
FWIW, I have considered a joystick for the UI on Aurora, but with the
ability to record and playback it's motion (like the hartmann neuron) but
that's a long way off.

I was talking about the VS mainly, not the PPG. The VS does have a complex
envelope generator with looping etc. It also has a special envelope
dedicated to the joystick which is the real magic. Check out section 8 of
the VS manual for more info:

You should definitely put these in the Aurora! ;) These two envelopes more
than anything are responsible for the VS sound capabilities. I tended to
use the joystick envelope more than using the joystick in real-time but it
was a nice performance tool.

James,
The PPG doesn't have complex looping ADSRs, sorry. in fact it has a
standard ADSR for VCF and VCA and a single AD EG for a 3rd EG (pitch).
I'd be interested to see the LFO routing options, yes the joystick was
good, but if you can do the same with an LFO or an ADSR then it's not a big
loss IMHO. I suspect Dave avoided the joystick on purpose so people
wouldn't compare it to the VS.

Unless I’m missing something it looks very little like a VS to me! It
appears to only have standard ADSR envelopes, not the multi, looping,
complex types of the PPG. It is also lacking a joystick and the joystick
mixing envelope. Without these two, even if it has all the VS waveforms,
it can’t do the essential things to sound like a VS.

I gotta say, I don't see a lot of difference between the Prophet 12 and the
VS.
4 oscillators, digital waves, analogue VCF/VCA, tonne of LFOs and
modulation options.
so I'd see the Prophet 12 as a VS with extras.
