I think there is definitely some compulsion behind people who do this to
themselves (or similar alterations). I used to be like that, in a way,
when very young and smoked a lot of pot; I used to do things that were
fashionable or trendy, then get completely carried away and go over the
top to an extent where it was almost 'freakish'. Ear piercing was one
(seven times in one ear, mostly self done), the hair was another, I used
to do my hair either in straight spikes or in an exaggerated 'flock of
seagulls' style, over a foot long, mind, spikes and sweep, heh!! Of
course, these days it's very hard to be the most extreme, because it's
gone even more potty than the first Goth movement.
I think it's definitely the drugs, no more, no less ;)
Not that I mind at all, each to their own until they get too old!
I kind of like Pete too; his rudeness is endearing, in a grumpy old man
with mashed potato shaped like a lion for a face sort of way! ;)
