There's every reason to believe that there's intelligent life somewhere 
else in the universe.

There's also every reason to believe that, had they actually found a way 
to cross the last interstellar distances in a reasonable amount of time, 
they would have either presented themselves at the UN, or conquered 
earth, instead of kidnapping some village idiot from rural Montana. :)
