Just an update in case anyone here cares. I managed to get the MKS70
fixed after running down a couple obsolete transistors and a new display
driver coil. If anyone else ends up in a similar position with display
showing all segments lit up, it is the coil. The good news is that it is
fairly easy to replace, the bad news is there appears to be no source
available for the coil anywhere. It was a custom part made for Roland by
Sumida but even Sumida have no datasheet with the specs of this coil.
After striking out on finding a JX-10 or MKS-70 coil, I managed to find a
JX-8P coil. Even though the display is not the same, the coil is so far
working great.
I love the sound of this thing. It really sounds unique to me and now
that enough time has passed, even the cliché sounds in it sound great
again. I'm definitely reliving my youth with memories of all the great
soundtracks from the era.
