How does it compare to things like NI's Guitar Rig? I find I end up using
Guitar Rig on pretty much everything synth related to liven up the tone.
Typically just running ti through a "clean" amp is enough to give it some
extra body and texture. I was unenthusiastic about Guitar Rig and I only
got it originally because it came with Komplete. One night I accidently
routed a fairly clean digital synth track through one of the amp models
and it just sprang to life. I've been hooked ever since.

No idea. I am sure M@ would know and be willing to tell you. I could
ask.
Suffice to say, anything that goes into it sounds at least as good when it
comes out (and sometimes better). I like using the amp and cab models in
very subtle ways to grit things up, and then use the rest of the signal
path to add space and shimmer. I have also used it going the other way as
a sound source by setting up internal feedback looks through other FX to
build textures. I have a few soundcloud clips of this (I think).
It's the only FX box I have ever really fallen in love with.
Tony (Maybe its time I started putting S in parenthesis)
