I started out with Doepfer, and I really disliked the form factor.
After having been building a patch for a few days such that you can
barely see the modules from behind the cable spaghetti, it was too
easy to pull out a patch cord or three by mistake and have no idea
where they came from. Most of the time I couldn't hear the difference,
though :-)

I went for dotcom instead. It does take up a huge amount of space, but
feels really robust and nothing happens by accident. I have started
adding some euroformat modules (mainly Doepfer) to it, since, as you
say, they are out there in vast numbers, and they work very well
together.
