The Mayans didn't, ever, believe that the world was going to end in 2012 - they simply stopped calculating their calendars beyond that point.

The Christian missionaries interpreting the Maya materials, however, did have their own reasons for making up the end-of-times scenario that pop culture now wants us to believe the Mayans 'predicted'.  Every time someone repeats this trope that the Mayans believed the world was going to end in 2012, they are doing the work of radicalized Christians in propagating terror.
