That's a popular point of view, and as many popular points of view, it's
also rather incorrect, or at least a lot more complex than that.
Basically, people don't want to pay taxes, but they want to get a lot of
things from their government (except interference, of course). In other
words, they want a free lunch.
The prime example of that for the last decade has been the US, but you
can look at most European countries as well. Basically, both people and
governments have been living beyond their means, spending more than they
earn.
You can blame the banks for providing easy credit, but nobody puts a gun
to your head and forces you to take out a loan. It's like blaming
lawyers, but lawyers exist because people make a mess of their lives,
and these days we no longer 'solve' our problems by beating up or
killing the other party.

Like Tony (HB) said, people think they have a right to this, that and
the other. Well, you don't. Yet, when I look around me (especially in
the Netherlands), I see people drive big cars, live in big houses, watch
big televisions; it all has to be XXL.
> cause people are dumb !!! I repeat myself I know .
Now that's a rather offensive remark. Even though I'm in the upper 1% or
0.1%, one thing I've found is that intelligence or whatever you want to
call it is no guarantee that you won't make a mess of your life, in
whatever way. You can have a good job and still be abused by your
husband, for example. Happens all the time.
Anyway, there was a rather long article (in English) on the site of Der
Spiegel, which I found rather enlightening:

Worth a read, if you find the time.
