I'd go further and say to try marinading the meat for a few hours or 
overnight e.g. for ale steak pie, marinade in a mix with the beer of a 
small amount of herbs, thyme, black pepper, Worcester sauce, Soy sauce, 
red wine vinegar, whatever.. and use some of the marinade to make up the 
pie stock. Experiment.
