Maybe a good reason to give up on that Alesis USB interface and get  
something real, i.e. a decent Firewire interface?

I have searched for a long time and the only interface I found that  
sounds really good *and* has rock solid drivers is the RME Fireface.  
Pretty expensive, but it behaves to well that it has been well worth  
it for me.
