It really depends, also, on how close you sit to your monitor. At work,
when I got a 22", it was like the best thing ever. And yes, it's really
nice, with it's 1680x1050 resolution.
I'm thinking, though, of not getting anything bigger than 22" at home
(but then in 1920x1080 resolution). With such a big screen, I would have
to increase font size to be able to read, or turn my head... 24" would
probably work as well, but it's bigger than our TV! I would feel a bit
guilty about that.
The question is, is it big enough? For development purposes, I'd say 22"
is enough; 24" would be nice-to-have. For the work I do now (analysis,
architecture, writing formal documents) I could actually do with a bit
more, but since my manager and direct colleague both have 19" screens
(one 4:3, the other 16:10) perhaps I shouldn't complain.
What you could do is take your current Macbook to a shop, hook it up to
a 24" screen, and figure out: will this be big enough for now, and the
best part of the next 10 years? If so, go for 24"; otherwise, check if a
30" will be better.
