I remember a visit to Paris a couple of years ago, and ordering a 
"pastis" on a terrace. I said it in a very clear voice, and I 
ordered in French. After three tries, the waiter still pretended 
not to understand, so I pointed at the table of a guy next to me 
who was drinking a pastis. Then the waiter said - exactly the way 
I had said, "Ah! pastis!"
Really...
