believe it or not, but my experience as a developer in this exact  
realm demonstrated to me that under OSX there are circumstances where  
the factory driver will load, but then instantly get replaced by the  
apple driver, then the factory driver will load again, etc. ad  
infinitum .. because of a bad *installer* which did not set up the  
driver precedence properly.

in this situation the advice is, as always: check the log file.   
always have console.app running (it costs nothing) and watch what the  
system is telling you is happening ..
