I think both time an gear are important. 
I think it depends on several factors, 
which one is the most important, but I 
tend to go for the good old 50-50 rule. 
Most of the time one isn't worth much 
without the other.

The more time you spend with the gear 
you have, though, the better your 
results might get.
But also: the more gear you acquire, the 
more fun you might have, the more ideas 
you might get and the better your 
results might be - provided you give it 
some time ;-)
