At that point you should've just done what I do currently with Tiger (and
did with Jaguar for the short time I had it on my Mac Mini) and what I'll do
with Leopard if/when I ever purchase it: don't bother with Time Machine and
it's incremental backup and fancy features at all. Don't waste your money
on Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper unless you need those incremental
backup features.

Instead, just use OSX's built in Disk Utility and do a full restore to your
external FW HD from your internal HD on a regular basis. That way, if your
internal HD craps out, all you have to do is plugin your already backed up
external FW HD, turn it on, choose it as the bootup disk, and you're running
a regular production machine. Only takes about a minute (the regular bootup
time). All you loose is whatever hasn't been backed up since your last
backup. The more regular you backup (I usually do at least once a month,
though I've been slacking lately as I'm trying to catch up on my Mail before
I do another full backup), the less you loose.
