There was also a microphone test for the latest Soundfield mic not very 
long ago. Patented? I don't know - I'm doing research, not 
commercialisation, so I don't worry about such things... But given the 
free availability of a range of ambisonic tools, I would guess that if 
there was a patent, it must have expired by now. I wouldn't be surprised 
if there were patents around building ambisonic microphones, as that is 
far from trivial...

Yes, there are a series of Max externals as well as VST plug-ins that do 
the hard math. Max ties it all together. I know that people at York 
University are using Nuendo to do some of the editing work, but judging 
by comments on the VST-Dev list, this must be on the awkward side. I've 
used Samplitude for some editing work, pretending that the recording 
represents a quad surround format...
