I am hoping to get a good tele with IS somewhere this or next year...

Hmm, I'm still very happy with the lenses I own. The "worst" is 
the Sigma (or Tamron) 28-300. Good enough for working outside, 
though, when the weather is nice. I do think, however, that I'm 
less concerned with things like distortion in lenses than you are ;-)
