Network question - final version (disregard the others)

there are WiFi routers, and there are WiFi Access Points (WAPS). WAPS
dont usually have routers in them - the are more like a wireless
switch. These used to be more common than they are now.

My WiFi router (a netgear something or other) has a firewall in it.
The modem I have may or may not - my provider manages it, but I can
tell you if it *does* have a firewall, its not being used. I have
never run into a case where it blocked me from accessing anythin in my
DMZ.

In any case, even if it *did* have a firewall, its still managed by
someone else and I wouldnt trust it. thats why i use the Firewall
feature of my router.

in addition to that, I have a software firewall on each machine. just
in case anyone does get through the routers FW, Ive got another at
each machine.

It all sounds more complicated than it is, really. modem->switch->systems.

one thing to note, if your on DSL you may need PPOE or some other
authentication to use your connection. my netgear router handles that
(i used to have DSL before I moved) so that you dont have to install a
PPOE client on the desktop machines (I think xp handles that natively,
but I never bothered - I always had a router taking care of it).

bottom line, either way works. pick one and go with it.
