Holy shit. I know how you feel.

I just lost a whole lot of data sort of like that as well.

The only approach that will keep you sane is a Zen-state of mind.  
don't be attached to those files. You will create better ones in the  
future...

Damn. I was very sad to lose about 1000 digital pictures and about 20  
sketches I made in Ableton Live and Logic... So I guess I got off  
easy...

Did you overwrite the hard drive with hardcore tools of just format  
the drive? In the latter case, programs like Data Rescue II (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue_info.php 
, for Mac, but I'm sure similar tools exist on all platforms) might be  
able to unerase your files?
