Maximum ram in windows?

There seems to be an issue with some modern chip sets where at least XP 
only sees part of the memory. I've definitely seen that issue with 
MacPro machines (I think it was 2GB there) and also some of our new Quad

cores (3.5GB instead of 4) at the office.
