I remember first hearing about the Yamaha VL-1 pretty late; it was long out
of production and had a reputation as a shockingly expensive instrument
that I guess people figured would trickle down into a more mainstream
instrument, as Yamaha had introduced the DX-7 after unveiling whatever its
progenitor was called. It was also described as the first instrument to
employ “physical modeling,” which by then had been lumped with the Nord
Lead and its successors (where did that come from, anyway?) and maybe
wasn’t so exciting. Anyway, time went on, I nearly got evicted playing
around with Tassman and I eventually forgot all about the Yamaha VL-1.
Something led me back to it a few days ago and I’ve been watching videos,
of which I’d say this is the “holy shit” variety.
Granted, scraping metal, bending cisterns and feedback aren’t to everyone’s
taste, but they are to mine.
I half-wonder if he can do this and a hell of a lot more with a Kyma rig,
and probably for cheaper, too, but I love that the dude’s really made this
thing his own.
Yours,
Niall.
