L + R

The fancy algebra is for encoding stereo streams in subchannels (as done
with FM stereo radio)

If you have two signals that are the same, then add them.

If the two original channels have phase differences, then L + R will get
you the best compromise.

Imagine listening to two speakers far apart and at equal distance,
assuming perfect phase response. The wavefronts add.
