Roli Rise Impressions

Mohsen how are you enjoying yours?

I have to say it’s pretty mind blowing. Way more impressive than I even thought it would be. So far have only used the Equator software - in the presets the acoustic type instruments were amazing and the standouts, will be very useful on their own. Then I got nervous because the synth presets were a bit cheesy, so I made my own patch and the thing really opened up. Basically you are the envelope, you are the modulation, per finger or course. The point where I realized that my breathing was an LFO in the patch…

Also Bigwig seems super nice, amazingly fast UI, made me remember the things I never liked about Ableton (always "felt" weird to me) - upgraded to the full so we’ll se how that goes.

The thing came in a very nicely packaged box, with a very personal note, assuming that they were happy with my purchase :-). After a few layers of boxing I got to the unit and the first thing you notice is that it's built like a tank. The thing feels *so* solid, which is in contrast to the very soft, tactile keyboard surface that begs you to play with it.
>>> Midi setup over Bluetooth on the Mac was nice, though not sticky at times, which meant the hassle of reconnecting, which is a bit odd, though it may also be operator error. When I had it over Bluetooth and running it in Live as a controller, the Bluetooth did drop, having me resort to gold old cable route. Additional instructions in the box tell you how to register and also get the Equator synth that was designed specifically for the brand. Once you get that going and start interacting with the squeeshy keyboard is where all the fun starts.

>>> Obviously their own synth is a showcase of the brilliant conception that is the Roli controller, but what it really does is to offer a keyboard-form instrument that has the same sensuality of that category of instruments that one can really be expressive with.
>>>
>>> The tactile interaction one develops with the 3-D keyboard, and how those nuances are all captured as expressive control parameters, and on top of the X-Y mini-pad and three additional slider controls, makes it one heck of way to play any of your virtual instruments. It truly breaths a new life to *ALL* your instruments and that is such an awesome feeling. It is not meant as a replacement for anything, but for anyone that uses a keyboard to program/produce with music, it is becomes a most pleasing, exciting, and interactive feeling one would ever have with a keyboard. Siting next to my Komplete Kontrol S61 and C-Thru controller, it feels very right and is going to be something that I will be going to a lot.
