I use a Synth Driver 32channel active balancing unit, in a 1u rack.
I have two actually, am selling one.

Personally I really like these (though I have the Yorkville version
which was identical):

Make sure what you get is passive, has a ground lift and a pad switch.
A dual box is better since DIs are so useful. I'd recommend staying
far away from active DIs (I'm not even sure what active DIs are good
for, seem to always cause problems at gigs I've been at). The above
ART boxes are around $70 CAD last I checked so don't pay anything
crazy.
My rock band uses two of those DIs so that we can have a local mix that
goes to our PA and second one that we can send to the main board live
or our recording setup when we jam.
