From what I read, the "made in..." was made a requirement so that
people could see where the product came from. The reasoning was that,
after the war, nobody would want to buy a product that said "made in
(West) Germany".
Unfortunately, the plan backfired, because the Germans had a name of
delivering high-quality products.
