that's where you see the effects caused by the individual companies' origin:
Avid - pro audio/video, Apple - consumer.
PT is largely used in film production. You just can't effort to waste time on crappy UIs.
When I touched v8 the first time, I thought 'Lego Duplo' (don't know if it's the same product name abroad ;)

it got a bit messy, yes.  Like the past decade including the aforementioned opening towards the low end.
in the top pro line plugins ran on PT HD and TDM hardware, the computer just acted as the front end, as did the desk(s).
Then there was RTAS, for the lower end, and now AAX.
