Perhaps use an analog limiter so you don't get any digital clipping? Or record with a low gain at a level where you still consider the noise floor acceptable upon recording clapping your hands and then normalizing...

Difficult :) depending on the distance it won't be so loud I think... a door slamming shut nearby might be louder?
