Reason 7

I have to admit, I am really liking Reason 7. Its fast, uses very
little CPU and has some really awesome possibilities. The modeled SSL
mixer is a huge improvement over the old mixer. That's still there,
of course, but you can pretend it isn't.

I've said all of this already in Andy's thread, but I want to talk
about something else - Rack Extensions.

So far, I hadn't been that impressed with the selection of instruments
and effects that were offered. There are a couple that seem
interesting, but for the price I may as well get the VST equivalent
and rewire with Ableton or FL Studio to access them. I was kind of
figuring I wouldn't bother with buying an RE's.

Then I browsed the utilities section. Simply put: Holy Shit!

They have RE's for processing CV, Generating CV, adding extra EG's and
LFOS, logic processors, etc. They even have modules that do math on a
series of signals you feed into it
(http://shop.propellerheads.se/product/cmdequation-math-module/). I
don't know how I would use that, but I could see it being seriously
cool for those reaktor guys who feel reason is too high level. You
can really take Reason to the level of acting like a full on modular
setup of enormous potential.

Reason's patching system has always been very intuitive, but I felt
having to instantiate multiple instances of Thor to get extra LFOs and
EGs was wasteful and silly. These REs get that out of the way.

The best part of this is the utility REs are generally very
inexpensive. Most of them cap off at around $15 with a few going to
$20 or 30.

This is really making me a believer and I haven't even tried recording
audio yet.

Tony

p.s. before you ask...no, this doesn't mean I am selling my modular.
