The Americans went to Venus too (and undoubtedly did the Russians go to 
Mars). It's just that the Russian missions to Venus were markedly more 
successful than the American ones.

In essence, that means that the Russian craft survived just long enough 
to send back some photos before succumbing to the hostile environment.
