I dunno why I didn't see this earlier, but just in case you're still looking for a solution Tony, Cockos (makers of the amazing REAPER DAW) have this:

It allows collaboration 'through the cloud' just as you wish, including the ability to put your own server somewhere safe and fast, and integrates fabulously with REAPER. Check it out and let us know how it goes Tony! :)
