Peter and I have taken our argument off list and are working it out, but I want to assure you that this is a very common technique in the Linux world, particularly for manipulating /proc in exactly this manner.  Its fast, relatively safe, and it documents the intent of the code quite a bit better than the 5 lines of code it'd take to do it the 'normal C way'.

Anyway, I still love you Peter K.
