The chimney conduct should really be cleaned up every year (or more) if it's really used. Plus, no wood should be near a hot conduct.

The main impression of heat in a house is not coming from the heating source but instead of the radiating sources (think walls). You feel the infrared, not the fire near you. A consequence with a wood fire in a chimney is you burn in front, and grow ice in your back. That's why there's always cast iron plaques in old chimneys, to radiate, and why Altekarrelhofen or stoves are done the right way : heavy mass to keep heat and radiate.
And no, in this old designs are not always better. Modern chimney systems are way more efficient/less polluting.
