I'd be laughing at the preposterousness of this sentiment, if it weren't 
for the fact that I have a colleague (soon to be ex-colleague) who 
harbours very similar thoughts. On a personal level he's pleasant enough 
(as long as you don't discuss his views on things like race), but he's a 
lazy sod, and buggering off to a place where he thinks the work will be 
more entertaining, or less demanding, or whatever.

I actually quite enjoy going to work and see my colleagues. Staying at 
home (for example when I'm sick) is fun for the first few days, but then 
I get bored out of my brain. I need to do something.

The Culture that Iain M. Banks describes is a pleasant figment, but no 
more than that.
