Ipad 3 charging issue

I have only had my iPad a week, but I have noticed that the battery life isn't what I expected based on friends who have an iPad 2.  It does get warm...but not as warm as a lot of devices I've used.  My phone, for example gets much hotter, into the uncomfortable range.
