The trick is to get the right people in your circles. Things that are helpful to do -
have your profile pic show your interests, for me I had a monome image, someone who was interested in monomes, music etc... would add me. Usually they would be interesting people that I would add back.
Search for prominent people in the areas of your interests and add them, they may add you if they think you are interesting. If they do other people who are interested it that person will add you from looking at said persons circles. And you can use the same technique.
Basically g+ is not mainstream, so your established friends will not be on there, so it's up to you to make new friends from strangers. It's basically a bunch of geeks standing in a room that have really cool things to share. You have to put work into it in the beginning but once you do the cycle will take over and you will get multiple people adding you every day.
My google feed is pretty cool to read most of the time, it's like a living tech/art/music blog everyone can post on. Facebook is more about personal lives, which it what it was designed for. G is more about interests and information, what it was designed for.
