I say get as much ram as you can afford (putting 8gig in my MBP17 was only $60, Crucial) especially on Mac as it really takes advantage of it automatically. And double especially if you are dealing with a lot of cores, you can have all the cores in the world working but if they are starving for ram then there is no point. In the 12 core MacPro I find myself wanting more than 16gig, but that's for AfterEffects stuff.
