zipping a file on an FTP site

helo, 

what do I need to zip a file on my FTP server? Anything beyond Terminal (I'm on OS X 10.6.6)? "help" inside my FTP client (standard Apple client) didn't return much that I found useful.

I had a long pong render process upload a file in the end -- now it's not zipped which would be much more convenient. I am wondering if I have to down- and reupload the file after zipping it locally, or if there is a quicker way. The file is quite large (oder 200 MB) and sometimes uploads like these don't fare so well with the FTP-server)
