MIDI over ethernet?

I know there are several solutions out there, but what is one that is:

A - free, or very close to it
B - reliable
C - Works on windows or mac

A friend and I are planning a gig together, and we will need to sync
both our laptops.  The problem is we only have two USB ports on each,
and both are taken up by other gear (we want to avoid using a hub if
we have to).  Running MIDI between the two via a short ethernet run
should be possible, and we *may* even run it over WI-FI if that is
reliable.
