When Apple moved to OS X, it fell on the NM community that the hardware was totally in the hands of the goodwill of Clavia to support and develop the editor. It ended up after some float, Clavia decided it was a better investment not to continue to work on the G1 editor but to focus on the forthcoming then G2. Clavia being a small company it made sense but it left us G1ers a bit orphans as the editor still works fine on windows as long as you check the ye old software compatibility box. But on OS X, the original editor doesn't work at all, and the one in development was stopped in beta. It works with only 2 bugs (sorry, I don't remember everything… one of the 2 is you can't remove a module or it'll crash save if you use the menus).
So, there's been talks in the community. And a few guys worked hard at trying to understand the communication protocol used by the G1 in order to make a new editor from the ground up, and free of any attaches from Clavia so that the G1s wouldn't die from lack of editor. (And the little birds sing and the trumpets trump)
Note that I've never used the free editor, only Clavia's, at the time the new wasn't working still and Clavia's was, as the bugs can be overcome. And since the NM is silent in the rack for I have not much time for noise making. ^^ (So it is better were someone can abuse it ;)
