Intel really didn't want FireWire to happen on the PC side, and that was the end of that. It was a success and still continues to be the pro arena, just because grandma does not use it does not mean it was a failure. Don't forget a majority of video and graphic shops run Mac, being a FireWire user just comes along with that.
UAD for instance just announced a FireWire DSP unit at namm.
Also let's not forget Apple was one of the first adopters of USB as well, which pretty much killed SCSI.
